Midwest Mamdani's Attempt to Make Minneapolis Socialist Falls Short

Minneapolis Mayoral Race: Jacob Frey Secures Victory

In the Minneapolis mayoral contest, Senator Omar Fateh, a progressive candidate, could not establish a stronghold for socialist ideals in the city. The Associated Press declared incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, the winner after ranked-choice voting results were finalized. Frey led with 41.7% in the initial count, followed by Fateh at 31.6%, while other candidates divided the remainder of the votes.

After tallying the ranked-choice votes, Frey ended up with 53.0% to Fateh’s 47.0%. Frey was seeking his third term and faced 14 challengers, some of whom felt he wasn’t progressive enough. Despite a significant win for socialists in New York City with Zoran Mamdani, Frey’s success might be seen as a setback for the far left of the Democratic Party.

Support for Frey came from key Democratic figures, including Governor Tim Walz and Senator Amy Klobuchar. On the other hand, Fateh, who aimed to be the city’s first Muslim mayor, had the backing of Representative Ilhan Omar, who represents Minneapolis in Congress.

Fateh, of Somali heritage, proposed ambitious measures, including protecting illegal immigrants from a “hostile federal government.” This idea stirred quite a bit of attention. Observers noted parallels between Fateh and Mamdani, given their similar political backgrounds and views.

Both have advocated for defunding the police, increasing taxes on wealthier residents, and critiquing Israel’s policies. One of Fateh’s notable campaign ideas was to ensure many 911 calls were handled by “non-police responders.” He previously endorsed a ballot measure aimed at reducing police funding in favor of “peace police officers.”

In contrast, Frey has argued that the city requires more police presence, pointing to the need for officers especially after the police force dwindled following the Black Lives Matter protests. His assertion that Minneapolis ranks low in police per capita echoes a growing concern for public safety.

Frey has weathered significant challenges while maintaining his leadership, even amid calls from the far left to abolish police forces altogether. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer expressed worries that Fateh’s win could lead to chaos, dubbing it a “pro-illegal alien communist” scenario for the city.
