Tragic Stabbings in New York Involving Salvadoran Immigrant
A Salvadoran immigrant has been arrested in connection with the stabbing deaths of two women in New York, one of whom was described as a dedicated mother of two who worked at Wendy’s.
Ronnie Yahil Alvarenga Rivera, 22, was apprehended on Saturday in Long Island, accused of murdering his 32-year-old roommate and 42-year-old co-worker, Ana María del Aguila-Cordova. Details surrounding the incidents are still unfolding, and a clear motive remains unclear.
According to authorities, Rivera was familiar with both victims, and it seems to be a premeditated attack. Police reported that Aguila-Cordova was fatally injured while taking out the trash at the Wendy’s restaurant in Island Park where they both worked.
Responding officers found a gruesome scene at around 12:30 a.m. on Friday. Later, at 3 a.m., Rivera’s roommate was discovered in a Valley Stream apartment, though that individual has yet to be identified publicly.
Police Chief Patrick Rider announced that both women succumbed to multiple stab wounds inflicted on their necks and torsos.
Rivera faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, with Nassau County Police expressing significant frustration over the situation. Rivera, originally from El Salvador, reportedly has no known gang affiliations.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican against incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul, criticized what he termed the “open borders” policies of the previous administration. He stated that the lack of stringent immigration control contributed to the tragic outcome.
“This shouldn’t have happened,” Blakeman commented, noting that the victims could have led fulfilling lives were it not for past policy failures.
Blakeman shared that Rivera entered the United States as an unaccompanied minor a decade ago. He suggested that the absence of supervision allowed Rivera to gain legal status as he matured.
In 2022, a federal program was implemented that granted unaccompanied minors legal residency documentation, such as a green card. Blakeman highlighted a federal initiative that lets local police engage in limited immigration enforcement, resulting in the removal of over 2,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records from Nassau County. Governor Hochul, however, aims to discontinue this program.
The victim, Aguila-Cordova, leaves behind two young children, aged 1 and 8. Rivera is set to appear in court on Tuesday.
