Migrant Hotels Make Visiting NYC More Expensive than Ever

The costs of illegal immigration are becoming apparent in New York, and tourists are paying the price.

New York City is becoming more expensive than ever to visit after Mayor Eric Adams (Democrat) converted many hotels into shelters for newly arrived immigrants. The New York Times report As Breitbart News reported Saturday, Adams said he currently has about 65,000 immigrants housed in more than 16,500 hotel rooms across New York City.

As a result, hotel prices for paying tourists have skyrocketed, while hotels owned by the largest conglomerates are raking in up to $185 per room per night, whether or not migrants are staying there.

“The average price of a hotel stay in New York City will increase 8.5% in 2023 to $301.61, up from $277.92 in 2022, according to CoStar, a leading provider of commercial real estate data and analytics.” Times report:

For the first three months of 2024, a time when prices typically fall, the average length of stay was still 6.7% higher. Compared to the same period last year, the rate is $230.79 per night, up from $216.38 in 2023. [Emphasis added]

About 135 of the city’s approximately 680 hotels participated in the shelter program. Many of the hotels are clustered in Midtown Manhattan, Long Island City in Queens and near Kennedy International Airport, traditional tourist hotspots. The city said it will offer participating hotels up to $185 per room per night. None of the hotels have gone back to traditional style. [Emphasis added]

Starting in late 2022, the city will sign a contract with a hotel industry group worth up to $980 million to pay hotels that decide to shelter migrants under a “sanctuary hotel program.” City officials said hotels are guaranteed a steady stream of revenue by receiving $139 to $185 per room per night, regardless of whether the rooms are occupied. (These fees don’t include the money the city spends on food and other services for migrants; hotels are reportedly being paid more than $185 a night.) [Emphasis added]

Currently, New York City, a city of about 9 million people, has fewer than 122,000 hotel rooms to compete for with tourists, and over the next three years, New Yorkers are projected to shell out about $10 billion for immigrants to move to the city.

Like hotel rooms, rents across New York City continue to soar as waves of immigrants arrive, undeterred by the prospect of losing their jobs or living in shelters.

Recently, Bloomberg reported that rents in New York City are “so high that the average salary can afford just 5% of the housing.”

“Rising rents and high upfront costs meant that less than 5 percent of New York City apartments were affordable for the average local worker last year,” Bloomberg said. report:

New Yorkers, who earned an average of just under $89,000 last year, can pay up to $2,216 a month in housing costs without spending more than 30% of their annual income. The average upfront costs, which include first month’s rent, security deposit and agent fees, were $10,454 last year, according to a new report from Zillow Group Inc.’s StreetEasy and tech:nyc. Only 4.4% of rental properties the average worker can afford are within their affordability threshold. That’s what the report said. [Emphasis added]

Even as hotel and housing prices continue to soar to record highs because of illegal immigration, Adams appealed to President Joe Biden to more quickly issue work permits to migrants who arrive at the southern U.S. border and are then released onto U.S. soil.

Experts have previously told Breitbart News that issuing large numbers of work permits to newly arrived immigrants would encourage more illegal immigration at the southern border, rather than act as a deterrent.
