A Venezuelan immigrant was charged with sexually assaulting a woman on the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) campus earlier this month.
Elvis Hernandez Pernalete, also known as Luis Guevara, 27, allegedly followed a woman out of the UIC-Halstead Blue Line station on March 16 around 8 p.m. and tried to grab her from behind. FOX Chicago report.
He allegedly stole the victim’s belongings, sexually assaulted her, and then fled. According to campus police, the victim was not a UIC student or employee, FOX Chicago reported.

“We have people in our city who are completely untested, we don’t know their criminal history, we don’t know what their capabilities are,” Councilman Ray Lopez told FOX Chicago. According to court documents, Hernandez-Pernalete also attacked a second woman who followed him from the station. He is charged with sexual abuse, aggravated assault and strangulation, robbery and attempted robbery.

On March 9, Hernandez-Pernalete was allegedly seen taking items from a clothing shelf at TJ Maxx, putting them in a backpack and leaving the store.
On Thursday, he was denied pretrial release by a judge citing a “pattern of attacking victims from trains.”
