“It was flooding like we’ve never seen before. It was an exponential change, something we weren’t expecting and it hit us hard,” Bleacher Falls Station Patrol said. Part of the reason for the surge was changes in Canada’s immigration policy several years ago. This change allowed immigrants from many countries, including Mexico, to fly to Canada without obtaining a travel visa. The only requirement was that immigrants obtain a low-cost electronic verification form.
“It allows you to enter the country as a tourist for a very minimal fee,” Lavallee explained. “Some people have taken advantage of the ETA program and been arrested here in the United States for illegal entry within 24 hours of arriving in Canada.”
During fiscal year 2023, Swanton District officers arrested approximately 7,000 immigrants who illegally entered eastern New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire from Canada. More than half of the participants, 3,747, were from Mexico and the Central American Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
Recent changes in Canada’s immigration policy may have some positive impact on the increase in immigrants choosing to enter the United States via the northern border. At the end of February, Canadian immigration officials reinstated visa requirements for Mexican nationals, CBS reported.
