Migrants break barriers and rush border guards in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas — A group of more than 100 immigrants attempting to enter the United States illegally stormed the border wall Thursday, smashing through razor wire and knocking over a security guard in the process.

The newspaper saw about 600 migrants gathered at the border and the Texas National Guard tried to push them back in small groups.

The situation became tense as groups were separated, and video showed migrants screaming for help and rushing to border gates. A group of men in parkas, gloves, and winter jackets pull apart the fence, and a group of five security guards form a defensive formation to fill the gap.

In the video, some of the migrants can be seen raising their hands in surrender, but seconds later others are seen waving through the security guards.

Members of the group ran to the border gate and began shouting at the National Guard on the other side. The Texas National Guard then rushes to try to secure the area.

Texas has deployed its National Guard to the Mexican border as part of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s “Operation Lone Star.”

The state on Tuesday began preparations to implement SB4, a new law that would allow state and local authorities to arrest people who entered the country illegally, but the state has appealed after the Supreme Court ruled that the law would be allowed to go into effect. The court blocked this measure.
