Escape from New Jersey Immigration Detention Center

On Thursday, an incident at New Jersey’s immigration detention centers led to the escape of several detainees, as confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

On Friday, a DHS spokesperson revealed that four detainees managed to flee from the privately operated Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark. A manhunt is currently underway, with additional law enforcement joining the search. Federal immigration officials have also reached out to the public for assistance in locating the escapees.

“DHS has confirmed that four detainees have fled from the private Delaney Hall detention facility,” the spokesman mentioned. “We are coordinating with other law enforcement partners to track down these individuals.”

He further urged anyone with potential information about their whereabouts to reach out, advising, “Please contact 911 or the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE.”

The escape seems to have taken place on Thursday evening amid protests and unrest surrounding the facility. Reports indicate that around 50 inmates at the Newark Detention Center caused damage by tearing down the walls of their dorm rooms, reportedly due to a meal delay. Concurrently, about 30 protesters gathered outside the facility to voice their opposition to immigration enforcement, with law enforcement arriving around 6 PM.
