National Guard Presence in Washington D.C.

On Wednesday, MSNBC contributor Mike Burnicle discussed how the presence of the National Guard in Washington, D.C. contributes to a sense of safety among residents. While attempting to critique President Donald Trump for deploying “uniform forces” onto city streets, Burnicle noted that, particularly in the Anacostia area, locals feel reassured by the “physical presence” of the National Guard. This strategy is part of Trump’s broader initiative to “reestablish law, order, and public safety” in the capital.

He highlighted a specific area, saying, “If you live across the South Capitol Street Bridge, you can still find that, even with the National Guard around, there isn’t a uniform presence you can rely on.” He pointed out that people aren’t being robbed en route to the grocery store, implying that some safety has returned, albeit with caveats.

On a separate note, the White House press chief, Karoline Leavitt, reported that nearly 850 officers were in action, leading to the arrest of 23 individuals for serious crimes, including murder and firearms offenses, just on one night. They also seized six illegal firearms during this operation.

According to the Rochester Institute of Technology, Washington’s murder rate in 2024 was notably high, ranking as the fourth highest in the U.S., even above cities like New York and Chicago. Tragic incidents, such as the gang-related shootings that took the life of parliamentary intern Eric Tarpinian-Yachim near a metro station, added to the concern, alongside another shooting outside the capital’s Jewish Museum that claimed two Israeli embassy staff members.

For context, Edward Coristine, a member of a local group, suffered severe injuries from a broken nose and concussion after intervening in a carjacking incident on August 5th.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) claims that violent crime has decreased by over 25% since 2024, although this statistic doesn’t factor in the more severe felony assaults. In contrast, FBI data suggests a mere 10% decline in violent crimes overall in the district since 2024.

In May, controversy arose when police commanders began probing potential manipulation of crime statistics in Washington, which allegedly made it seem as if crime rates had dropped.
