Knicks Turn Season Around with Defensive Improvements

The Knicks have managed to pull themselves out of a difficult stretch, primarily thanks to significant defensive enhancements.

Coach Mike Brown highlighted an often-overlooked player: Jalen Brunson. “Jalen is a good defender,” he mentioned. “I think many are missing this part of his game. I’m not exactly sure why it hasn’t gotten more attention over the years. He’s competitive, full of energy, and quite strong. There was this play in the Toronto game that stood out. We aim to get a one-two right—leading with your chest rather than your hands, and when the ball comes over the screen, it’s about getting around it and using some body tension to apply pressure.”

Brown added, “If there were a perfect example of protecting the ball in a pick-and-roll situation, that play would fit the bill because he slid into position and used his chest effectively. [Immanuel] Quickley drew an offensive foul because of it.”

Currently, the Knicks are on a five-game winning streak with an outstanding ERA of 92.8, the best in the NBA during this period.

“He really pushed with his chest, showed his hands, and played solid defense, even nursing a shoulder bruise,” Brown explained. “Of course, it wasn’t just him; the entire team stepped up. But it’s great to see him do this, especially given the scoring demands we’ve placed on him.”

After a rough patch that saw them lose nine of eleven games, the Knicks certainly needed this respite.

There were two days of rest between notable wins against the Nets and the 76ers, and then again before facing the Kings. The five-game winning streak took place over the span of ten days.

“Having the chance to focus in the gym without the pressure of imminent games really helps us,” Brown said. “We’ve made some adjustments on both ends. The more we work at it, the stronger we’ll be moving forward.”
