Postgame Reflections on Knicks’ Defense

Mike Brown’s comments after the game focused on one main idea.

“I really hope our guys start to come together and play defense the way we need to,” Brown noted following the Knicks’ narrow 134-132 loss to the Spurs in San Antonio. “We can sort out the offense as we go, but if we keep playing defense in spurts like that, it’s just going to give other teams hope. And in this league, when you give teams hope, they’ll capitalize on it, especially if they’re strong.”

And the Spurs did. They put up 41 points in the fourth quarter, snapping the Knicks’ three-game winning streak.

Throughout their recent road trip, the Knicks struggled defensively. Though they occasionally managed late-game heroics and decent offensive play, those moments eventually caught up with them on Wednesday.

Missing Josh Hart (ankle) for all three games and Mitchell Robinson (load management) for the last two was tough. These players are crucial defensive assets, and their presence should help when they return.

However, even before their absence, the Knicks’ defensive struggles were evident—following their NBA Cup victory, they recorded a defensive rating of 120.9, which ranks as one of the lowest in the league.

“I genuinely believe the players care and are trying to do their best. But we just haven’t been consistent,” Brown reflected. “Winning can make you a bit complacent, thinking things will just work out. But we need to keep our defensive efforts up for the full 48 minutes, or we’ll be stuck wondering what went wrong if we don’t.”

During the final minutes of the fourth quarter, with the Knicks ahead by eight and just under eight minutes left, Julien Champagnie pushed up the court, allowing Tyler Kolek to backtrack too far, leading to an easy, uncontested three-pointer. Brown immediately called a timeout, visibly frustrated as he approached Kolek, his arms outstretched.

He even demonstrated how Kolek should be defending, continuing the discussion on the bench after play resumed.

This interaction underscored Brown’s protective instincts for the team.

At times, they show defensive effort, especially when they’re falling behind or in critical situations. Yet, consistency has not been their strong suit.

“When you’re healthy, you have a level of confidence,” Brown pointed out. “But we’ve experienced stretches of poor defensive plays in a row. It’s not that the opposing team’s execution is flawless; sometimes it’s just us not being fully engaged.” He emphasized that these lapses are controllable issues that they have faced during games.

Winning can sometimes camouflage these shortcomings. Recently, the Knicks have managed to pull through, even with a shaky defensive performance.

However, the initial games of the road trip were against relatively weaker teams, the Hawks and Pelicans, which is quite different from facing a contender like the Spurs.

“Winning can provide a false sense of security, but losing brings you back to the reality of your situation,” Miles McBride commented. “And tonight definitely reminded us of that.”
