Mike Johnson criticizes Schumer for prolonging the government shutdown

House Speaker Addresses Government Shutdown

On Thursday morning, House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana gave a speech regarding the ongoing government shutdown. He, along with other Republican leaders, pointed fingers at New York Senator Chuck Schumer and leading Democrats for the situation.

“What’s happening in Washington right now seems complicated,” Johnson remarked. “But it’s actually quite simple.”

“The majority of the Senate is already on our side… So this is really about Leader Schumer and a large portion of his caucus,” he added.

Johnson further accused Schumer and other Democratic leaders of prolonging the shutdown to satisfy the party’s more radical wing. “They’re worried about the Marxist faction of the Democratic Party,” Johnson stated. “He’s afraid of being challenged by far-left members.”

He emphasized that the Democrats’ political maneuvers are hurting ordinary Americans: “They’re playing politics, and real Americans are paying the price.”

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole from Oklahoma mentioned that Republicans are prepared to collaborate with Democrats to move forthcoming bills along. “We’re ready to work. We have capable colleagues on the Democratic side,” he noted.

However, he expressed disappointment that Schumer and other significant Democrats are hindering bipartisan efforts. “The majority of the Senate is already on our side. The bipartisan majority is 55 members. So this really concerns Leader Schumer and a large portion of his caucus,” Cole remarked.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise from Louisiana reiterated Johnson’s concerns about Democrats trying to placate their more extreme elements. “I think the American people are tired of this behavior,” he said, suggesting that these attempts at appeasement are why Democrats are unwilling to compromise. “Chuck Schumer cares more about his political career than about millions of American families,” he asserted.

On the other hand, Schumer is focused on pushing for additional healthcare funding and insurance coverage, which Democrats are advocating to include in the continuing resolution to resume government operations. He wrote, “The government is shutting down because Trump and the Republicans are set on taking healthcare away from the people.”

Since the shutdown, there have been five votes aimed at reopening the government, all of which have failed. Another vote is set for October 10th.
