Mike Johnson puts pressure on Chuck Schumer, closes the House

Senator Lankford’s Bill to Prevent Government Shutdown

With the ongoing government shutdown, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has canceled a House vote for the fourth consecutive week. This is part of Johnson’s strategy to apply pressure on Senate Democrats and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who have blocked Republican funding proposals twelve times since the House approved a bill on September 19.

Interestingly, September 19 also marked the end of a House session, meaning many lawmakers have been home for over a month now. Republicans are now pushing for a short-term extension of fiscal year 2025 spending levels until November 21. This extra time is meant to allow Congressional negotiators to work on a long-term agreement for fiscal year 2026.

In a related development, tensions escalated recently when a heated exchange occurred between House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Mike Lawler amidst the shutdown.

Democrats have voiced strong objections about being excluded from the funding discussions. They are also withholding support for spending bills that do not extend federally enhanced pandemic-era subsidies for Obamacare, which are set to expire at the end of this year.

Despite this standoff, several Republicans seem to still support Johnson. However, there are notable critics within the party. For instance, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) has expressed concern about Johnson’s strategy, remarking that lawmakers haven’t fully engaged in resolving the shutdown issue. Similarly, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has publicly criticized the approach as well.

In another voice of dissent, Rep. Beth Van Dine (R-Texas) suggested that the party might be better positioned if they returned to Washington sooner. She noted that the longer they remain away, the more stale their message could become.

As this situation unfolds, it’s becoming more complicated. Lawmakers are facing a blend of pressure, criticism, and the ticking clock of impending deadlines, which adds to the overall uncertainty. How this will resolve remains to be seen.
