On this week’s broadcast of Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) asked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to step down from his leadership post. He insisted.
“Why do you want Mitch McConnell to resign?” host Maria Bartiromo asked.
“Look, Republican senators are not part of the feudal system,” Lee responded. “Each of us represents our own state. And every once in a while, as we introduce one bill after another, the Senate Republican leadership joins all or most Democrats. We’ve seen him sharply divide the Republican Party, actively alienate most Republican voters, and take positions different from most Republican senators to enact Democratic priorities and things. That’s what unites the Senate Democratic Conference.”
“This is not personal to any individual leader,” he continued. “Still, we have to deal with this issue because this is how we alienate voters. This is how we lose elections that we could have won. Maria, the Republicans… We have a real chance to win a majority this November. But if we continue to do things like ultimately enact priorities for the Democratic Party through our leadership, there will be brand confusion. And the voters we need to be present to vote for Republican candidates in Senate races across the country are less likely to vote if they don’t know which team is responsible for which policies. I guess.”
