Sen. Mike Lee Seeks Bipartisan Resolution for Charlie Kirk

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) is working to gain bipartisan support in the Senate for a resolution that honors Charlie Kirk, a conservative athletic leader who was tragically killed on Wednesday in Lee’s hometown of Utah.

Kirk was shot while leading a Q&A session during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem. He co-founded this organization, which has become a significant political and cultural influence, and he organized forums aimed at fostering civil discourse among students on campus.

Lee submitted the resolution on Thursday, describing Kirk, who was a “devoted husband, father, and Christian,” and expressing his hope to unite colleagues across party lines to condemn the act of violence. “I hope we can come together to honor this champion of free speech and truth who impacted so many of his fellow Americans,” Lee shared.

The resolution strongly denounces Kirk’s assassination, expressing condolences to his family and recognizing his dedication to the principles of civil debate among all Americans, irrespective of their political affiliations.

Tributes to Kirk began almost immediately following the shooting and continued after President Donald Trump acknowledged Kirk’s passing. In a four-minute video from the Oval Office, Trump referred to Kirk’s death as “a dark moment in America.” He described Kirk as a patriot who dedicated his life to open debate and the ideals of the United States.

Vice President JD Vance also released a heartfelt statement on Wednesday night, honoring Kirk for his willingness to listen and engage in public discussions about ideas.

Lee’s resolution not only acknowledges Kirk’s contributions to conservative causes but also emphasizes his commitment to civic virtues regardless of political ideology, referring to him as a “champion of freedom of speech and truth.” He noted that Kirk was often involved in public debates at universities.

Lee remains hopeful that, despite the current political divides, the Senate can still unite around foundational American ideals.
