Pence’s Support for House Speaker on Anti-Abortion Legislation
In a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, former Vice President Mike Pence expressed gratitude and emphasized the importance of advancing anti-abortion measures. He referred to these legislative moves as a potential “generational victory in life.” Pence has long been an opponent of abortion, advocating against abortion pills and other procedures he deems unacceptable. In this correspondence, he encouraged lawmakers to back a nationwide ban on abortions after 15 weeks.
Pence’s letter stated, “This law will carry over the hopes, prayers, and hardships of the pro-life movement,” showcasing his commitment to the cause. He also pointed out the need for transparency around abortion medications, emphasizing the safety concerns they pose to women.
Recently, Congress took action that affected Planned Parenthood by cutting off its Medicaid financing as of July 4th, relating to the broader anti-abortion initiatives. The legislation targets funding for organizations that perform abortions, which could significantly impact the approximately 600 Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation.
Acknowledging the long struggle for anti-abortion advocacy, Pence remarked, “We don’t celebrate this huge achievement today,” signaling a recognition of the effort required to reach this point.
He noted that he was the original author of a law intended to restrict federal funds aimed at organizations providing abortions back in 2007. Pence concluded his letter by expressing enthusiasm for future collaborations to safeguard these legislative gains, extending well wishes to Johnson in the process.
As of now, Planned Parenthood has not commented on Pence’s letter or the associated legislative changes.
