Mike Rowe: Parents didn’t get an ‘honest chance’ to consider college alternatives

Once an affordable investment in the future, college tuition has skyrocketed to an all-time high, and it’s only getting worse: Some families are paying more than $90,000 per academic year at private colleges, and graduates are left paying huge amounts in student loan repayments.

Some conservatives say it’s time to end four-year colleges and invest in vocational education, while others believe college is still beneficial for some people. Still others want young conservatives to attend top universities to reclaim the American system.

In “Zero Hour,” Mike Rowe, Emmy Award-winning television host, producer, writer, and CEO of the MicroWorks Foundation, James Poulos To discuss the current state of higher education in America.

Even though more young Americans than ever before are going to college, Lowe believes Americans are “over-educated and, conversely, or perhaps perversely, under-informed.”

“We feel like we know a lot of stuff that we don’t necessarily do anything with, and we don’t have the things we should know readily available to us,” Rowe says. “Nobody talks about the fact that 41 percent of people who enroll in college don’t graduate, and 85 percent of those who do graduate don’t end up working in their chosen field.”

Rowe believes that college is not the best option for many young Americans. But because the idea of college has been ingrained in nearly every American’s mind by society, many families don’t know what other options are available. “The advantages of the four-year deal are very often not honestly explained, and so unfortunately, at least in my lifetime, I think parents and children have never had the opportunity to honestly explore all of their options,” Rowe argued.
