Dallas Cowboys’ Mixed Start and Defensive Changes
The Dallas Cowboys continued their rocky performance in Week 5, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and slipping to a 2-3 record for the season. There’s been a lot of focus on the team’s defense, which hasn’t quite hit its stride yet. In light of this situation, the Cowboys reportedly held a meeting among players to address their concerns.
Mike Tomlin, a former Pittsburgh Steelers coach and now an NFL analyst for NBC Sports, shared his thoughts on what such meetings might indicate about a team’s dynamics. He mentioned this during an appearance on the “New Heights” podcast, hosted by brothers Jason and Travis Kelce.
“I think you’re dead,” Tomlin remarked when discussing the implications of such meetings. However, he later clarified that his real worry lies not in the meeting itself, but rather in how it became public knowledge. “If it did occur, I’d like to not hear about it,” he stated. “The fact that you hear about it is what makes it BS.”
In a separate conversation, Tomlin addressed whether he faced criticism for his support of the Steelers while commentating. “To be honest with ya, I don’t care if I do,” he replied. “How can you be somewhere 19 years, man, and had really a personal stake in most of the guys being there and not care for ’em? Not root for ’em? I’m not gonna pretend that I’m not. Everybody knows where my heart is and where my support is, and I’m not apologizing for that.”
Meanwhile, the Cowboys made adjustments to their coaching staff after last Thursday’s 24-16 defeat. Last season’s defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, left for an assistant head coaching role with the San Francisco 49ers. In his place, Christian Parker has taken the reins to improve the struggling defense. Some signs of progress have been noted, though the Cowboys still rank low in yards allowed per game.
In an effort to bolster their defense further, the Cowboys have brought in Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant. Pettine has previously collaborated with Parker, adding some familiarity to the new arrangement.
This Sunday, the Cowboys will face the Green Bay Packers at the iconic Lambeau Field, looking for a much-needed rebound in Week 6.
