Mike Trout Addresses Trade Speculation at All-Star Game

PHILADELPHIA — During the media day for MLB’s All-Star Game on Monday, it took only moments for reporters to pose the familiar question to Mike Trout. As a South Jersey native and longtime fan of the Phillies, fans are curious if he ever sees himself leaving the Angels to join his hometown team.

“I never thought I’d hear this question today,” Trout quipped, acknowledging it’s a common topic for him.

Despite his emotional ties to the area, the three-time MVP remained guarded. He didn’t provide a straightforward answer when asked about trade rumors over the years.

“I’m an Angel,” Trout stated firmly. “I have a no-trade clause.” When the discussion turned to his decision-making, he reiterated, “It’s obviously my decision. But I’m with the Angels. That’s the question.”

Given that Trout is under contract with the Angels until 2030, one might assume the Phillies would be high on his list of potential teams. His affection for Philadelphia was clear as he expressed excitement about playing in the All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park, a venue he frequented as a child growing up in Millville, New Jersey.

“It’s always special to come back here,” he shared, mentioning his family and friends in the area. “I used to root for them when I was a kid, so it’s great to play in this stadium.”

Trout even joked about LeBron James possibly joining the 76ers, inviting the NBA star to golf at a course near his home.

“It means a lot,” he reflected on his Philadelphia connections. “I grew up being a Phillies fan, an Eagles fan, a Sixers fan. I know how passionate they are about their sports teams.” He added, “I go to Eagles games and support the Eagles. It means a lot. I appreciate them.”

This year has been particularly significant as Trout, who missed the previous two All-Star Games due to injuries, returned in strong form, hitting 18 home runs and posting an .863 OPS.

“I certainly circled the All-Star Game in Philadelphia on my list,” he said. “The last few years have been tough for me, battling injuries, but to come back and feel good, to start and lead at center will be a great moment for me and my family.”

However, when asked about the prospect of actually playing for the Phillies, a team currently lacking outfielders, Trout sidestepped the speculation. Instead, he pointed to a childhood idol for support.

“I’ve been a huge Jeter fan since I was a kid,” he noted, citing Derek Jeter’s loyalty to a single team throughout his career.

For now, Trout seems determined to follow a similar path, despite his affection for Philadelphia and the ongoing struggles of the Angels.
