Mike Tyson’s former trainer ’embarrassed’ after pre-fight cockiness blew up in his face

Mike Tyson's former trainer Jeff Fenech said Tyson's phone kept ringing after telling “so many” people to bet on Tyson to beat Jake Paul in Friday's fight.

The highly-anticipated showdown ended in a stunning decision, with 27-year-old Paul defeating 58-year-old Tyson by unanimous decision in an eight-round heavyweight bout at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“It may have been a bad fight, but what he represented and what he was trying to do was not only show people that he can fight, but he's trying to show people that he can still do it at 58 years old. ,” Fenech said.

“He changed his whole life, and I think that's what it is. The rest of the pieces far outweigh the fight.”

Before the battle, Fenech predicted If Tyson had fought the right way, he could have achieved the quickest victory of his career.

Fenech said he has spoken to Tyson numerous times since his loss to Paul and that the former heavyweight world champion is still interested in fighting again.

But he advised against it.

“My advice is you don't have to do it again,” Fenech says.

“He talks about being sick…but when you're 58 years old and you're as fit as he is, it's very difficult to stay healthy. Sometimes you overdo it and your engine seizes up.

“For me, I'm so proud that Mike changed lives and over 100 million people watched at home. All of us who fight will tell you what a bad fight that was, but… Most people think what a great job Mike Tyson did.”

Tyson suffered from a number of health issues prior to the fight, including a recurrence of an ulcer, which forced the fight to be postponed. It was originally scheduled for July 20th.

After the fight, Tyson revealed that he almost died in June.

“This is one of those lose-win situations.” he wrote At X. “Thank you for last night. I have no regrets about stepping into the ring one last time. I almost died in June.

“I had eight blood transfusions. I lost half my blood and 25 pounds in the hospital, and I had to fight to get healthy enough to fight, so I won.” Having my kids watch me stand toe-to-toe and go through eight rounds with a talented fighter half my age is an experience that no one should have the right to have.

Netlfix announced on Saturday that 60 million people watched the Tyson vs. Paul fight.
