Mike Vrabel criticized for supposed affair with Dianna Russini after Patriots share viral challenge video

NFL Preseason Buzz Surrounds Patriots Coach Mike Vrabel

The internet has been lively with chatter about a scandal involving the NFL during the preseason opener featuring the Patriots and the Colts. It all kicked off when Patriots coach Mike Vrabel made a dramatic move, tossing a red challenge flag while performing an unexpected spin at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.

A video clip of this moment quickly circulated online, with many viewers drawing parallels to Vrabel’s recent photo scandal involving NFL insider Deanna Russini from The Athletic.

Page Six had initially reported on April 7 about a photo showing the two of them, both of whom are married to others, holding hands at a luxury resort in Arizona back in March.

The Patriots’ social media account playfully commented on Vrabel’s flag toss: “Vlaves raised that challenge flag,” prompting one user to remark, “He got married in the offseason too.” Other comments took jabs at the recent scandal and poked fun at coaches and former NFL officials.

Since the intimate photos were released, Russini has remained silent, having resigned from The Athletic amid the controversy.

The New York Times, the parent company of The Athletic, is looking into the situation at hand. Russini and her husband, Kevin Goldschmidt, have two sons, while Vrabel and his wife Jen, married since 1999, also share two sons.

Following the photo leak, the Patriots stood by Vrabel, who opted to step back from Day 3 of the NFL Draft for family counseling.

Vrabel’s flamboyant flag throw resembled a shot put technique often seen in track and field, which came right after the NFL announced that coaches could now assign staff members to handle challenge flags.

After the game, which ended in a 13-13 tie, Vrabel stated that he wouldn’t pass off the responsibility for throwing the challenge flag. “I don’t think it’s new because I think there are others,” he said, expressing some confusion over why it became a topic of discussion. “Usually the officials will ask us about it 90 minutes before the game.”

He elaborated, “We have a meeting to discuss various roles, like who’s holding the challenge flag, the ‘get back’ coach, captains, and other duties. I was taken aback that this became a big deal. But no, I’m holding the challenge flag.”

Additionally, the Patriots shared a video of a Bon Jovi tribute where the singer dressed up as Pat Patriot, the team mascot, to surprise Vrabel for his birthday on Friday.
