U.S. Ambassador Responds to Concerns Over Ammunition Stockpile
On Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Walz criticized reports claiming that the United States’ ammunition reserves are critically low as tensions with Iran escalate.
Walz dismissed the notion that military actions against Iran have significantly drained American weapon stockpiles. He acknowledged that the conflict in Ukraine might have strained some resources but asserted that the U.S. has ample supplies for dealing with Iran.
“Let me be clear: The U.S. military has everything we need to effectively carry out this operation in every way possible,” Walz stated during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
He went on to express frustration, suggesting that those spreading such claims should face serious consequences. “I’m telling you, the people who are spewing this nonsense deserve to be in jail,” he said.
Walz pointed out that the U.S. is exploring affordable, modern military technologies for potential operations in Iran. He noted that while some military stockpiles have been diminished—not only those sent to Ukraine over the past few years—but also due to ongoing conflicts in the region, the situation isn’t dire.
According to Walz, “A lot of the stockpiles have been depleted, not just the ones we’ve provided to Ukraine over the last few years. And Secretary Hegseth inherited a depleted situation, not just from Ukraine but from the ongoing fighting with the Houthis under the Biden administration.”
Former President Trump has similarly downplayed concerns regarding U.S. ammunition supplies.
As of Sunday, it was the second consecutive day without U.S. strikes against Iran, following a pause in hostilities from President Trump, who has also been under scrutiny for potentially escalating military action. There were whispers that worries surrounding the ammunition stockpile influenced his decision to hold off on further attacks.
When asked if the decision to refrain from escalation was indeed made, Walz was somewhat evasive. “I would not go that far,” he replied, emphasizing that “the president has all options on the table.” He mentioned that Trump is allowing for some breathing room in ongoing diplomatic discussions.
According to Walz, the internal situation in Iran complicates achieving a diplomatic resolution. “There’s internal conflict within Iran that makes it very difficult to reach a reasonable solution from a diplomatic standpoint,” he said.
This pause follows renewed U.S. attacks on Iran earlier in the month after the Islamic Republic escalated tensions by targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Last week, Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth testified to Congress, calling for an additional $67 billion in aid to the Pentagon, amid concerns about the impact of war expenditures on available funding.
