Waltz on Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, expressed optimism about President Donald Trump’s newly announced Gaza peace plan, describing it as a potential “lifetime opportunity for Middle East peace.” During a recent interview, he emphasized the plan relies on international support despite U.S. criticism of the UN’s performance in Gaza.
Waltz noted that the U.S. aims to reform the UN while working together on issues like aid delivery in Gaza. He pointed out a concerning statistic: nearly 90% of aid trucks were intercepted recently by armed groups or crowds in need. “It’s essential that we ensure that UN agencies, which the U.S. funds significantly, provide assistance properly,” he remarked.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, backed by the U.S. and Israel, claimed to have served over 178 million meals since starting operations in May. Waltz deemed the situation as “unacceptable,” indicating that he would push for funding freezes until reforms are enacted.
After taking office on September 19, just ahead of a vital UN meeting, Waltz highlighted Trump’s ambition to be seen as a peacemaker, which he believes aligns with his own experience. He referred to his military background, saying, “The green beret signifies a ‘warrior diplomat,’ as we often carry influence.” He related this to Trump’s strategies concerning Iran.
Waltz voiced his intention to restore the UN to its foundational purpose, aiming to eliminate bureaucracy and inefficiencies he believes have plagued the organization. He pointed out a recent vote concerning Haiti, illustrating efforts to stabilize the region without over-relying on U.S. resources.
He acknowledged prevalent skepticism about the UN in America but contended that dialogue among global leaders is crucial and that it’s essential for the U.S. to maintain its presence at the table. Waltz also raised awareness about the impact of international regulations on American industries, stressing the importance of being proactive in safeguarding U.S. interests on a global scale.
Ultimately, he reinforced the commitment to fighting for American values, stating, “We are engaged to protect our way of life, and this president is determined to continue that fight.”
