Mike Williams denies taking social media shot at Aaron Rodgers

Former Jets wideout Mike Williams was adamant that he had no intention of making a social media post that was widely interpreted as a jab at Aaron Rodgers.

In his first game after being traded to the Steelers, Williams caught the winning touchdown from Russell Wilson as his new team defeated the Commanders on Sunday.

“Thank you #WholeLotta #WeBack #RedLine,” Williams wrote in an Instagram post that accused him of running the wrong route on the interception that sealed the Jets' loss to the Bills in October. This appears to be a reference to comments Rodgers made after the incident.

However, Williams Mike Golic and Mike Golic Jr. join DraftKings Network On Wednesday, he said his caption was not a shot at the former quarterback.

“No. No, that was not the case at all,” Williams told the father and son. “I mean, I feel like I've made my mark on the red line. That's what I'm good at. When I play on the red line, I feel like that's how people know me. That's how my game works: I can check the tape, I can check anything, and I see a lot of catch on the red line.

“It was just a caption that was needed at the time. The ball got caught there and we won.”

Rodgers was also asked about his social media posts during Wednesday's media availability.

“I like Mike. I'm happy for Mike,” Rodgers said.

After a loss to Buffalo in October, Rodgers went down where he thought a receiver should be.

“There are two verticals, Allen.” [Lazard]is below the seam and Mike is below the red line,” Rodgers said after the game. “So I'm throwing a no-look towards the red line. I look over there and Mike is running an 'in-breaker'… it must be going down the red line.”

The next day, the Jets traded for Davante Adams and then sent Williams to the Steelers at the NFL trade deadline in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
