New Jersey Governor-Elect Vows to Resist Trump
New Jersey’s Governor-elect, Mikie Sherrill, is determined to position her state at the forefront of opposition against President Trump when she officially takes office on Tuesday.
Sherrill, a Democrat who outperformed expectations in last year’s election, emphasized Trump’s role in exacerbating economic issues within the state during a recent appearance. She argued that the president’s policies have created significant challenges for residents.
“Currently, the doors to opportunity are closed at every level,” Cheryl noted during an interview on ABC News’ “This Week.” He expressed concerns about the president’s tariff system, which he believes mainly benefits Trump while increasing costs for everyone else.
“That’s why we’re fighting it,” Cheryl stated firmly.
Sherrill mentioned that Trump has not reached out to her since her election victory, despite his frequent visits to his golf club in New Jersey. However, she has communicated with several of his administration’s members.
Interestingly, Trump’s lack of contact follows a friendly meeting he had with New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani shortly after his election, despite their past disagreements. Sherrill did not endorse Mamdani in the previous election, a move that shows her clear stance.
Although Trump might not consider Sherrill a priority, she’s planning to make New Jersey a blueprint for resisting his influence.
“He continues to twist our laws and values to gain power,” Sherrill said. “That’s inappropriate. An opposition is forming here, and it starts in New Jersey.”
She pointed to various national issues, including Trump’s deployment of immigration enforcement officers to Minneapolis as a reaction to unrest. “The protesters were peaceful, but ICE was not peaceful,” she explained, criticizing the aggressive tactics used during those incidents.
“I think the president is trying to incite the protesters to divert attention from the militias he’s supporting that are actually harming American citizens,” Sherrill added.
Moreover, she criticized Trump’s recent proposal to purchase Greenland, saying, “There’s not a single person in New Jersey who wakes up and thinks, ‘I wish today was the day the president would spend billions on Greenland as grocery prices rise.'” She concluded, “Nobody wants that kind of deal.”
