Conflict Over Pension Plans in Argentina

Argentine President Javier Miley and his vice-president, Victoria Villalruel, are in a tense public dispute regarding proposed pension increases.

Miley labeled his critics as “silly” and “traitors” in a post on X, while Villarruel responded by telling him to “grow up.”

His outrage was fueled by a significant loss in Congress, where the Senate approved a measure aimed at boosting pensions and disability benefits.

Despite this, Miley has stated he will not support an increase, arguing that it jeopardizes his financial surplus. He accused Villarruel of pushing the vote forward without his consent.

Interestingly, in Argentina, the vice-president also presides over the Senate. This dual role enabled discussions on emergency pension hikes to proceed, even amidst boycotts from senators aligned with Miley’s administration.

The motion was approved with 52 votes compared to four abstentions, despite the lack of government-supported senators. Proponents of the increase argue that it is critical for pensioners’ welfare.

However, Miley insists this move contradicts his commitment to eliminate the nation’s chronic budget deficit and combat inflation. Earlier this year, he celebrated a significant economic achievement: the first budget surplus in over a decade for 2024.

Moreover, the country’s inflation rate dropped to 1.5% last month, marking its lowest point in over five years. But, it’s worth noting that the austerity measures that curbed inflation also sparked public protests, with pensioners holding weekly rallies outside the council.

Following the Senate’s vote, President Miley promptly declared his intention to block the pension hike, expressing skepticism about the likelihood of a successful veto override and indicating he would pursue legal action if necessary.

He didn’t hold back on critiquing Villarruel, sharing a post that labeled her “a traitor, a demagogue, and financially foolish.” In response, Villarruel argued via Instagram that pensioners and the disabled cannot wait any longer for payment increases and suggested that the president could save funds by cutting spending on intelligence agencies and travels.

Since taking office in December 2023, Miley has traveled extensively abroad. One notable appearance featured him publicly wielding a chainsaw as a symbolic gesture for his administration’s budget cuts, a moment that drew attention at the US Conservative Political Action Conference.

Villarruel also pressed the president to “speak and act like an adult,” highlighting the ongoing tension between them.
