This week, the U.S. military utilized laser technology to neutralize drones linked to cartels at the border, as stated by the Joint Task Force-Border Security (JTF-SB).
The JTF-SB mentioned that military personnel engaged “three adversarial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)” during this operation.
According to the statement, these drones were deemed a threat to both military personnel and Customs and Border Protection agents working in the area.
“Defeating these hostile drones showcases the readiness, vigilance, and technological superiority of the JTF,” noted Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of JTF-SB.
For this task, the JTF-SB deployed the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL).

Maj. Gen. Taylor further elaborated, pointing out that cartel organizations are increasingly deploying drones for illegal human smuggling and surveillance on law enforcement activities. He emphasized that integrating advanced countermeasures, including the laser system, signals a firm stance against hostile surveillance.
The JTF-SB has actively taken measures along the southern border, reinforcing it with hundreds of miles of barriers, conducting numerous detection patrols—often in collaboration with the Mexican military—and carrying out thousands of observation flights while also clearing vegetation in remote locations.
This task force was established by President Donald Trump on January 22, 2025, through an executive order that instructed the Department of War to assist the Secretary of Homeland Security in achieving full operational control over the southern border.
“We stand alongside our Customs and Border Protection partners to secure this border, protect our military personnel, and disrupt these criminal networks at every opportunity,” concluded Taylor.
