Military families in the Middle East allowed to leave on a voluntary basis by the Pentagon

Defense Secretary Pete Hegses has authorized the voluntary evacuation of US military dependents from various locations in the Middle East, a significant decision amid rising tensions in the area.

According to Hegses, the safety and security of service members and their families takes precedence, and US Central Command (CENTCOM) is keeping a close watch on the situation.

This directive will affect US military installations in regions covered by CENTCOM, which includes notable hotspots like Iraq, Syria, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

While the Department of Defense has not provided specific threats, concerns have arisen as Iranian-backed militias increase their activities, contributing to regional instability.

“CENTCOM is collaborating closely with our State Department and local allies to ensure readiness for any global mission,” Hegses mentioned.

Voluntary departures are not particularly unusual but typically occur when security conditions worsen. The established protocol, detailed in documents like JP 3-68, allows for the state-sponsored withdrawal of dependents when threats escalate.

As part of these measures, the voluntary departure of military dependents, essential Department of Defense employees and their families will be encouraged, with the government covering relocation and return costs.

The Department of Defense has not yet provided further comments on this announcement.
