Israeli Defense Forces Chief Urges Hostage Deal
During a recent visit to a military base in Haifa, Eyal Zamir, the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), reportedly encouraged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to sign a hostage contract that he described as “on the table.”
According to a report from Israeli Channel 13, Zamir communicated to Netanyahu that the IDF has laid out the terms of the transaction, but the decision now rests with the Prime Minister. As the IDF prepares for a potential occupation of Gaza City, Zamir emphasized the urgency of accepting the deal. He expressed concerns that the hostages could be endangered if the IDF advances too close to Hamas, as the terrorists might harm or kill them.
Zamir reiterated, “There is a transaction on the table, and it is an improved Witkoff outline. It must be taken. The IDF has provided the terms for hostage trading. Now it is in Netanyahu’s hands.”
Earlier this month, Hamas seemed to consider a version of the deal that was previously rejected in May by US special envoy Steve Witkoff. This proposal suggests a two-stage process where some hostages would be released in exchange for the Israeli release of Palestinian prisoners, followed by a withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza. The remaining hostages would then be released at the conclusion of the conflict.
Netanyahu has yet to officially respond to Hamas’s apparent willingness for negotiation, which emerged as the IDF geared up for an incursion into Gaza. Israel has stated that it prefers not to engage in a multi-stage process, aiming instead for the simultaneous release of all hostages. Despite this, Netanyahu has declared his commitment to dismantling Hamas and occupying Gaza, although he may be open to negotiation regarding the terms.
