Military moves advanced nuclear reactor from California to Utah

Army Advances Nuclear Reactor Transport

The Army announced on Sunday that it is moving forward with President Donald Trump’s directive to transport a next-generation nuclear reactor from California to Utah. This effort aims to modernize the nation’s nuclear energy infrastructure while bolstering national security.

The reactor will be transported from March Air Reserve Base in California to Hill Air Force Base in Utah. Following that, it will be taken to the San Rafael Energy Laboratory in Orangeville, Utah for testing and evaluation. This is a key step in exploring how advanced nuclear technologies can support military operations and defense initiatives in remote areas.

In a recent post, the Army shared a picture of the reactor loaded onto a C-17 aircraft, stating, “We are moving forward with President Trump’s executive order on nuclear energy. We will begin airlifting next-generation nuclear reactors immediately.”

The Army highlighted that successfully delivering and installing the reactor will create new opportunities for energy resilience and strategic independence for the nation’s defense. Officials emphasize an innovative, agile approach to addressing critical infrastructure needs.

“By harnessing advanced nuclear technology, we not only bolster national security but also pave the way for America’s energy future,” the agency stated. It expressed that this milestone reflects the innovative spirit of the nation and is crucial for safeguarding the welfare and strength of future generations.

Recently, Fox News Digital reached out to the Army for further comments on the initiative.

In May, President Trump signed several executive orders designed to revitalize domestic nuclear power development. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum remarked that the United States was once the leader in nuclear technology but had become stagnant due to excessive regulations.

Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth mentioned, “We will illuminate the world with our nuclear capabilities while others lag behind.” One of Trump’s directives focused on reforming the Department of Energy’s research and development processes, expediting reactor testing, and launching pilot programs for new constructions.

The White House stated that nuclear power is essential for ensuring the nation’s global industrial, economic, and technological advantage while achieving energy independence and protecting national security.

This nuclear initiative is just one part of a larger strategy by the administration aimed at enhancing domestic energy production and ensuring reliable grid operations across various sectors.

Shortly after, Trump directed the Corps to collaborate with coal-fired power plants on establishing new long-term power purchase agreements, meant to enhance grid reliability and resilience. The order emphasized that the United States must keep its electric grid robust and not reliant on unpredictable energy sources, as it is fundamental to national defense and economic stability.

In closing, the order also declares, “It is the policy of the United States that coal is essential to our national and economic security.”
