Federal authorities have confiscated a large shipment of methamphetamine that was reportedly being smuggled into the United States, as detailed in a statement to Blaze News.
This particular contraband was discovered hidden within a shipment of leeks at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility on Saturday, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
“The efforts of our CBP officers continue to be illustrated with massive disruptions of smuggling attempts at our international crossings,” said a CBP representative.
The tractor-trailer, which was traveling from Reynosa, Mexico, was sent for a secondary inspection on the bridge. The examination, which used non-intrusive technology, revealed irregularities in the shipment, while a canine unit detected the scent of narcotics.
This prompted a more thorough search, leading to the discovery of 95 packages of methamphetamine, totaling an astonishing 1,204.82 lbs. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is around $10,750,000.
According to Carlos Rodriguez, the port director of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, “Our officers continue to be on a streak of success.” He emphasized that their actions have significantly hindered smuggling attempts at the nation’s borders.
In response to the incident, special agents from Homeland Security Investigations have launched a criminal investigation into the meth hidden within the leek shipment, and the Office of Field Operations has taken possession of both the narcotics and the vehicle involved.
Earlier this month, another significant drug bust occurred in the same port, where authorities seized cocaine valued at $634,000, as reported by CBP.
The CBP also mentioned in a statement that, “Fulfilling President Donald J. Trump’s mandate,” the Department of Homeland Security and the CBP have worked to establish what they describe as the most secure border in history—preventing dangerous individuals and illegal substances from entering American communities and ensuring safety for future generations.
It’s noteworthy that the Pharr International Bridge is a crucial traffic route, with an estimated $50 billion worth of trade passing through it annually.
