Milwaukee Radio Station Says it Agreed to Edit Joe Biden Interview

A Milwaukee radio station acknowledged Thursday that it edited an interview with President Joe Biden at the request of his campaign, acknowledging that it did not meet “journalistic interview standards.”

After Biden’s disastrous debate defeat last month against former President Donald Trump, he gave an interview to Earl Ingram, a popular host for the Wisconsin-based talk radio station Civic Media, after which reports emerged that the Biden campaign had requested that some parts of the interview be edited, and that the station had complied.

of the station said in a statement. Releasing Thursday:

On Monday, July 8, Civic Media management received a call from the Biden campaign immediately after the phone interview was recorded, requesting that the recording be edited twice before it was aired. Civic Media management immediately investigated, and the production team at the time determined that the edits were insubstantial and removed the two short segments before airing and releasing the interview. The network promised to make the full, unedited interview available online. The two edits made were to remove a section where Biden said, “I have more black people in my administration than any other president,” and a section where former President Trump’s remarks calling for the death penalty for the Central Park Five were incoherent.

“I don’t know if they’re asking for hanging,” he said, but they […] “He was convicted of murder,” he said.

“High profile interviews come with a listener expectation that journalistic interview standards will be applied, even in non-news programming. We failed to meet that expectation. Civic Media disagrees with the team’s judgment at this time, both in regards to the handling of the interview questions and the decision to edit the interview audio,” the statement continued.

The network also said it had clarified its policy “particularly with respect to commentators and other non-news personnel.”

“Civic Media fully supports Earl Ingram and his team,” the statement continued. “Earl is an invaluable voice for Milwaukee and Wisconsin and remains a valued member of the Civic Media organization. The decision to make the requested edits to the interview was made in good faith. While we do not agree with the decision, we support the team. This is a learning experience and we will do better going forward.”

Last week, it was reported that the Philadelphia-based radio host “quit her radio station after interviewing the president with questions provided by Biden’s campaign, a move that many media outlets, including her own, have banned.” NPR.
