Minneapolis-area police issue thin ice warning after multiple people fall into frigid water

Authorities in the Upper Midwest are warning residents of the dangers of venturing out into dangerous areas. frozen lake or pond Several people fell through the thin ice and at least one died.

Woodbury, Minnesota Police Department Two people, including a teenage boy, needed rescue after falling through thin ice at Lake Markgrafs on Monday, police said.

Police said in a Facebook post that at around 4:30 p.m. local time they received a report of someone falling through the ice, and when authorities arrived on the scene, a second person came out onto the ice and rescued them. He said he was told that he had done so. The first victim had also fallen.

First responders were able to pull the person out of the water, but a second person, identified as a teenage boy, had been submerged under water and ice before they arrived and immediately could not be rescued.

Divers eventually located the man and both victims were taken to a local hospital. Their conditions were unknown as of Tuesday morning.

Police said another water rescue took place earlier in the day.

To the north, the body of an ice skater from Duluth, Minn., was pulled from Woodstock Bay in Superior, Wis., after falling onto the ice Sunday night, police said.

Police in Douglas County, Wisconsin, say 78-year-old Gregory Germer left his home to go ice skating around 1:30 p.m. Sunday and never returned.

A search was launched and police said they finally found the body around 4pm on Monday.
