Minneapolis Catholic school shooter was staying with a friend following a breakup, documents reveal

Robin Westman, the individual responsible for a recent shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school, had recently ended a relationship and was living with an elderly friend in St. Louis Park. Before that, he resided in an apartment in Litchfield. His father informed police that Westman, 23, was dealing with the breakup at the time of the incident.

Law enforcement also conducted a search at Westman’s father’s home in Minneapolis, where they confiscated a tactical vest, two computer drives, and various documents.

On the morning of the shooting, Westman was reported to have opened fire, leading to the tragic deaths of two children, aged 8 and 10, while injuring 18 others, over a dozen of whom were also children at the school.

Westman was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, dressed in black tactical gear and armed with at least two long guns. The weapon used belonged to his father, James Westman, who provided information about his son’s breakup.

Furthermore, Westman’s mother, who had previously been contacted by authorities, has chosen not to speak to police following the shooting, which evidently left her distraught. Meanwhile, the FBI investigation has included visits to a property in Florida associated with Westman’s mother, although officials have stated this was unrelated to the shooting.

Westman’s background includes a recent name change, and he had attended the Catholic school linked to the church where the incident occurred until the eighth grade. According to court documents, there’s a suggestion that the name change was in recognition of a person who worked at the church.

Moreover, Westman had posted what police are calling a “manifesto” online before the tragic events, which included various video recordings showcasing his thoughts and handwritten notes regarding firearms. Authorities confirmed that all firearms used in the attack were legally purchased, and Westman had no prior criminal record.

In response to this horrific incident, memorials have been set up outside the church, demonstrating the community’s grief and solidarity. Local police are continuing to investigate, and there are discussions surrounding mental health evaluations and past encounters Westman had with law enforcement. Activists and officials are revisiting Minnesota’s firearm regulations in light of this incident, particularly surrounding the state’s “Extreme Risk Protection Order” program, which aims to prevent those with mental health issues from obtaining guns.
