Champlin Park High School Softball Team Wins State Championship

The Champlin Park High School softball team claimed the Group 4A State Championship on Friday, aided by a junior pitcher identifying as transgender. They triumphed over Bloomington Jefferson, finishing with a score of 6-0 at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, located on the University of Minnesota campus.

Marissa Rothenberger, the pitcher, delivered a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits, with the final hit occurring in the sixth inning. It wrapped up a dominant tournament run where Rothenberger pitched all 21 innings across three games, surrendering only two runs in total and leading the team to three consecutive victories. Consequently, she earned a spot on the all-tournament teams.

In the quarterfinals, Rothenberger faced No. 7 seed Igen and recorded a 5-0 win, giving up seven hits. Then, in the semi-finals, Champlin Park narrowly beat No. 6 White Bear Lake with a score of 3-2, with Rothenberger once again pitching for the entirety and contributing with two doubles.

The report noted that Rothenberger allowed only two runs through 35 innings, including 14 shutout innings, which played a crucial role in getting Champlin Park to the state tournament for the first time in the school’s history.

Coach Bryan Woodley had previously commended Rothenberger, stating that she’s always reliable in high-pressure situations, even calling her the best center fielder in the state.

Meanwhile, it’s reported that the Minnesota State High School League allows boys identifying as girls to participate in women’s sports, which raises complexities regarding federal Title IX regulations. This situation is currently being evaluated by the Trump administration as it considers responses to states like California, Maine, and Minnesota that permit transgender athletes to compete in women’s categories.
