Minnesota governor's ICE conflict leads to calls for the Insurrection Act

Corruption and Incompetence in Minnesota

It seems like Minnesota is in a state of turmoil, with many criticizing Governor Tim Walz for what they term a catastrophic failure in leadership. Reports suggest a fraud scandal that could amount to over $9 billion, alongside unusual policy decisions, like allowing tampons in men’s restrooms. People are questioning nearly every facet of his administration. Recently, Walz went so far as to assert that Minnesota is essentially “at war” with the federal government, painting federal law enforcement as occupying forces. In response, radical protests erupted in Minneapolis, where demonstrators clashed with ICE agents. This is quite concerning. Some argue that President Trump should step in and invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to restore peace.

Then there’s the situation with sanctuary states and cities. These places have effectively undermined federal law enforcement efforts. Numerous left-leaning leaders have resisted cooperating with federal immigration laws, blatantly defying requests to hold illegal immigrants detained for other crimes. When these individuals are released from state prisons, ICE often isn’t notified. This means that law enforcement has to track them down in the community, placing both officers and citizens at unnecessary risk. Policies aimed at protection seem to, well, protect violent offenders instead, including murderers and drug dealers.

The fallout over the shooting of Renee Good—who identified herself as a “legal observer” but was actively opposing ICE—has only intensified the situation. It raises a tricky question. When ICE officers instructed her to exit the vehicle, she fled and ended up injuring an officer. While attempting to protect lives, officers faced a deadly situation. An SUV can easily become a dangerous weapon. It’s kind of chilling to think about how quickly a normal vehicle can cause serious harm.

Critics on the left are quick to label ICE agents as murderers, which feels a bit misleading. If a jury determines that Good’s death resulted from misconduct on the part of her partner, only that partner could face serious charges. The partner explicitly encouraged her to drive away. It’s not unreasonable to think a jury might see that as a form of conspiracy.

Walz—and to some extent, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey—have been pretty much silent on the ongoing chaos. After Good’s death, Walz even suggested deploying the Minnesota National Guard against federal forces, further complicating matters. Extremists have targeted federal assets and exposed the identities of ICE agents, creating a climate of fear for law enforcement. It seems that the situation is spiraling out of control, and some think Walz shares the blame.

In Minnesota, with its glaring defiance of federal law, left-leaning officials are attempting to challenge the legal framework that dictates federal supremacy. These blue states have even launched questionable lawsuits arguing against ICE’s operations. I mean, really, what kind of foundation do they have for these claims? If they were right, could states from the Jim Crow era have successfully blocked federal civil rights laws? Meanwhile, states that cooperate with ICE aren’t facing the same levels of chaos.

Amid all of this, law enforcement has been left to stand by as protests turn violent. Despite clear lawbreaking, officials have often refrained from intervening. It raises yet another question: what is their role, really?

President Trump could indeed federalize the Minnesota National Guard and mobilize active-duty military personnel. The Insurrection Act has been predominantly employed in the past during national emergencies. For instance, when President George H.W. Bush implemented it in 1992 to address riots in Los Angeles, it showed the kind of precedent that could apply here. Minnesota is enduring a similarly serious threat with federal employees being targeted by violent groups. A politically charged environment claims to create danger, which feels alarming—bordering on a scene from a war zone.

The use of federal military force alone won’t be a cure-all. It’s equally crucial that federal prosecutors go after those implicated in inciting violence in Minnesota. The state’s Attorney General appears unwilling to enforce the law, raising concerns about accountability among local officials. A federal grand jury may have to step in to address serious allegations, from harboring illegal aliens to obstruction of justice. One of the most striking claims involves a significant fraud scandal, reportedly involving $9 billion of taxpayer money being mishandled, sending alarm bells ringing about corruption in state leadership.

This ongoing disregard for law, coupled with a threat to public safety, presents a daunting dilemma. In these circumstances, the responsibility falls on President Trump to act decisively. He possesses the constitutional authority to enforce order and protect lives, making it imperative that he considers invoking the Insurrection Act. The safety and welfare of Minnesotans hang in the balance.
