City officials have released the identities of two police officers and a paramedic who were shot and killed Sunday morning in Burnsville, Minnesota.
The city said a gunman killed police officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Rouge, and firefighter and EMT Adam Finseth.
According to the city, officers were called to the home just before 2 a.m. after a domestic situation in which an armed man barricaded himself and his family inside the home. There were reportedly several children inside the home.
When authorities arrived, “the situation escalated into a gunfight,” the city said in a statement. The gunman killed Elmstrand, Rouge, and Finseth, and also wounded another officer, Sergeant John Johnson. Adam Medlicott is expected to survive.

The gunman, who has not been identified, was reported dead at around 8 a.m., and the family inside the home escaped to safety shortly after.

The Minnesota Police Peace Officers Association wrote in a letter to X that it is “heartbroken” and “devastated by this terrible loss.”
“These heroes left behind loved ones and communities who will forever remember their courage and dedication to keeping Minnesotans safe,” the organization wrote.

A full press conference is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m., and a wake is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Burnsville City Hall.
