Minnesota son, 31, accused of killing his father ‘execution style’: police

A 31-year-old Minnesota man is accused of shooting his father nine times in an “execution-style” manner at the family's rural hunting lodge, police said.

Kirk Edward Haslett III, 31, of Cambridge, was charged with second-degree murder and kidnapping in the incident, according to the Pine County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said in a statement that tensions escalated between Hazlett and her father, Kirk Edward Hazlett II, 62, on Nov. 15 in Hinckley, Minnesota.

Police were first called to the fatal crash after receiving a 911 call reporting a shooting around 8:44 p.m. The caller, later identified as the victim's brother, told police that the son had just shot his father.

When they arrived at the elder Hazlett's two-bedroom cabin in the countryside, they found Hazlett II lying face down on the floor near a couch. Police said several shell casings containing ammunition were on the ground next to him.

Court documents obtained by Fox 9 KMSP “He was found with a large amount of blood pooled on the ground near his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” the 62-year-old man said.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the victim had been shot nine times, with one bullet entering his head above his left ear and exiting through his right forehead.

During the ensuing investigation, the victim's brother told authorities that he was finishing dinner with another witness when he received a notification on his cell phone from a security camera that someone was approaching the house with a gun. did.

When he went to retrieve the gun from his bedroom, witnesses heard three gunshots and saw his nephew holding a gun.

The witness claimed that the 31-year-old man instructed his uncle and another witness to sit on the couch. They said they feared for their lives, believing Hazlett might shoot them next.

The brothers told deputies that the gunshot victim was still alive at the time, as he could be seen “breathing a little.” But soon after, Hazlett stood over his father and “shot him in the head in an execution-style manner,” court documents say, according to local media.

A witness said Hazlett III “looked like he came in with a mission…to kill him.”

During the investigation, both witnesses told police that Hazlett III and the victim “didn't get along and had a bad relationship for a long time,” and that Hazlett III “didn't have a good relationship with his family.”

They said he appeared “very coherent” and “did not appear to be under the influence” of any substance during the incident.

Hazlett III was arrested and booked into the Pine County Jail.

Hinckley is about a 130-mile drive north of Minneapolis.
