County Faces Property Tax Increases for 2026

The county has until December’s end to finalize its property tax rate for 2026. If you recently looked at your property tax statement, you might not be thrilled with what you found.

According to early data, Minnesotans could see their property taxes rise by almost $950 million next year, reflecting a 6.9% increase from 2025. While the Minnesota Department of Revenue indicates that the final property tax levy might be lower than the preliminary estimate, last year’s figures were still reduced by $63 million, though this may not lessen the burden on taxpayers.

With current projections for 2026, counties are expected to collect over $4.54 billion in property taxes, representing an 8.1% jump from 2025. For the first time ever, the city’s property tax levy surpassed $4 billion, marking an 8.7% increase. Townships will see a 5.6% rise, totaling around $19 million, while school fees are anticipated to reach about $4.4 billion—up 5.8% from 2025. Additionally, special tax district taxes will increase by $24 million, or 4.6%.

It’s worth mentioning that these figures are preliminary maximum rates and could decrease, but not increase. The finalized tax rate for 2026 needs to be established by late December.

Also, the property tax notices you received don’t account for the outcomes of recent school referendums across numerous districts. On Election Day, voters green-lighted 60 out of 96 funding requests in Minnesota, signaling that further tax increases are likely in several localities.

This increase continues the trend of rising property taxes in Minnesota. If the preliminary rates are upheld, overall county property taxes will have surged by over $1 billion since 2021, with projected increases as follows:

  • 2026: 8.1% (preliminary)
  • 2025: 6%
  • 2024: 5.5%
  • 2023: 4.2%
  • 2022: 3.4%

Cities and towns are on a similar track, experiencing increases of:

  • 2026: 8.7% (preliminary)
  • 2025: 7.5%
  • 2024: 7.4%
  • 2023: 7.9%
  • 2022: 5.5%

There’s a collection of proposed tax increases tracked over several months that might be of interest as you navigate these changes.
