Miranda Cosgrove Takes a Wild Turn in Wrong Paris
Miranda Cosgrove is diving headfirst into a muddy adventure with her new Netflix romantic comedy, Wrong Paris, which is now streaming.
She shared a particularly memorable scene where she wrestles with co-star Madison Pettis in a mud pit, saying, “There’s nothing like wrestling with a muddy guy in the rain.” This experience, she thinks, will bond them as friends for life.
Directed by Janine Damien and scripted by Nicole Henrich, Wrong Paris stars Cosgrove as Dawn, a girl with dreams of attending art school in Paris. But, alas, the reality of tuition and travel expenses looms large. Her sister suggests she audition for a reality show titled Honeypot that offers contestants free flights to Paris—only to discover the filming location is actually Paris, Texas. Disappointed, yet unable to back out due to financial commitments, Dawn finds a silver lining when she meets the show’s charming bachelor, Trey McAllen, played by Pearson Fode.
Cosgrove, who has been in the industry since she was ten, first gained fame on Nickelodeon with shows like Drake and Josh and iCarly. She felt an instant connection with Pettis, also a former child star known for her role on Disney Channel’s Cory in the House.
In discussing their shared background, Cosgrove says, “We are both kid actors, and that’s a very specific kind of experience.” She talked about the collaboration with Pettis, which involved acquiring new skills for the film, along with references to their time on set.
Reflecting on her role as both star and executive producer, Cosgrove noted that she loved the strong female characters in the script. She worked to ensure that female roles were expanded and more prominent. One of those characters is played by her real-life friend, Hannah Stockings, whose contributions elevated the film.
As for working with Madison Pettis, Cosgrove finds it amusing that they share a similar history. Though she wouldn’t label their relationship as a rivalry, she acknowledges the unique bond they have due to their early careers. “There’s nothing like fighting someone in the mud in the rain,” she recalls as she laughs about their time together in the scene.
Despite feeling under the weather while filming, she enjoyed the mud pit scene immensely, stating, “Honestly, it was one of the most enjoyable scenes in the end.” The shoot entwined a mix of improvisation and choreography, which made it all the more engaging.
Shifting gears to the filming location, Cosgrove described her time in Vancouver. She found the contrast between the ranch atmosphere and her city life in L.A. refreshing and immersive. “I love the feeling of being on a ranch,” she shared.
Interestingly, she mentions that Pettis couldn’t stop quoting Drake and Josh on set, which made them both nostalgic, given their shared childhood stardom.
On the skills learned for her role, Cosgrove humorously recounted taking a welding class, which was a fun experience despite not featuring much in the film. She also picked up lassoing techniques and attempted to ride a mechanical bull, which she admits was much tougher than expected.
Reflecting on her connection with Pearson Fode, she noted that their paths first crossed on iCarly during a Halloween episode. They reminisced about their initial encounter, and she felt grateful to work with someone who had experience in ranch life, as Fode helped her with the riding scenes.
Cosgrove’s Texas accent may not have come naturally, but she found herself slipping into it during filming. “I think Pearson certainly does [the accent] well,” she observed, humorously noting her own LA roots.
When asked about future roles, Cosgrove expressed her love for rom-coms and her eagerness to explore different genres, including horror, stating, “I had so much fun doing this that I would like to do another rom-com in the future.”
Cosgrove is enthusiastic about her ongoing collaboration with Netflix, having recently been in another film, The Bride’s Mother. She appreciates the supportive environment and looks forward to more projects with them.
Finally, she shared hopes of starting the filming for a new iCarly movie next year. Having read part of the script already, she feels excited to reunite with her longtime co-stars, expressing her affection and anticipation for the project.
