Actor Misha Collins Discusses Transgender Rights and Republican Support
Actor Misha Collins, known for his role in the TV series Supernatural, expressed confusion over why transgender rights haven’t become a “conservative rallying call.” During his time portraying Castiel from 2008 to 2020, he shared videos on YouTube during Pride Month, highlighting the “shameful” reality of transgender individuals losing rights in the U.S.
Collins remarked that he does not grasp the resistance from Republicans and conservatives towards transgender issues. He mentioned that trans activists have been pondering how to engage Republicans rather than viewing them as a lost cause.
“It has happened to me personally,” Collins shared. “We should bring together moderate Republicans, as this is deeply upsetting. The Republican philosophy has long been about keeping the government out of personal affairs. The idea is to let the free market operate without interference. Why not extend that to allow individuals the freedom to live their lives?”
He added that discussing transgender rights aligns well with conservative principles of individual choice. “This is meant to be a gathering focused on conservative values, isn’t it?” he questioned.
However, he noted that this perspective is not universally embraced. Some argue that Democrats and trans activists seek more than just individual freedom; they aim to use governmental authority to mandate taxpayer funding for medical procedures, impose penalties for not using preferred names or pronouns, secure access to gender-specific spaces, and influence school curricula to favor pro-trans viewpoints.
On his YouTube channel, Collins commented on the prevalence of cross-dressing in America, expressing disappointment about the treatment of the transgender community by the government. He lamented the firings of trans service members, restrictions on passport identification, and increased hate crimes against the community.
“While we want to celebrate Pride Month, we are, unfortunately, left with feelings of shame over how trans individuals are being treated,” he remarked in the video’s description. “For instance, Kansas recently enacted a law revoking licenses from transgender people, making it illegal for them to even renew their driver’s licenses.” He described this as part of a broader, systemic issue that undermines the rights and safety of transgender individuals across the nation.
Collins invited trans activist Erin Reed and Congresswoman-elect Zooey Zephyr from Montana for a deeper discussion on the topic.
