Trump Proposes “Golden Dome” Missile Defense System
President Donald Trump, alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, has revealed plans for a new “Golden Dome” missile defense system in the United States.
This system is inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, which has effectively intercepted missile threats and is backed by U.S. support. Trump envisions a more extensive, advanced multi-layered dome system to be established in America.
A significant portion of the budget currently under discussion in Congress—$25 billion—will fund this initiative. Trump is optimistic, claiming that the primary phase of the dome will be operational within three years, stating it “will work perfectly by the end of my term.”
He expressed confidence regarding congressional backing for the project, noting, “It’s amazing how easy it is to fund it.”
Countering Global Threats
Hegseth framed the Golden Dome as a proactive step to address security concerns from nations like China and Russia, emphasizing the need for advanced defense systems. “In the end, this is here; the Golden Dome in America is a game changer,” he commented, referring to it as a significant investment in national security.
During the announcement, Trump highlighted the importance of developing robust missile defense systems, saying, “The campaign promised Americans to build cutting-edge missile defense shields to protect their homelands from the threat of foreign missile attacks, and that’s what we’re doing today.” He also appointed General Michael Guetlein to oversee the project, describing him as uniquely qualified for this role.
Hegseth characterized the Golden Dome as “a bold initiative” and an extension of Trump’s ongoing commitments to national defense. He argued that investing in such systems is crucial, given the evolving threats from other nations.
Guetlein added that the Golden Dome is essential for ensuring the safety and quality of life Americans expect. “We owe it to our kids to protect them and give them the quality of life that we all enjoy,” he asserted.
Challenges Ahead
The administration acknowledges the significant challenges that lie ahead, especially as other nations modernize their military capabilities. Guetlein pointed out the necessity of adapting to these threats, asserting, “Our enemy is extremely capable and highly motivated to put our hometown at risk.”
In his concluding remarks, Guetlein stressed the urgency to “change that equation and double the protection of our hometown,” suggesting that a comprehensive approach to national security is now crucial.
