Missing girl dead, sister rescued after ‘human trafficking’

Police in Mississippi say a 4-year-old girl was found dead and her 6-year-old sister was rescued from a horrific scene at a cage of small animals possibly linked to human trafficking.

Thursday’s grisly incident in Jackson came one day after the girls’ mother, 35-year-old Carrie Barnett, was found murdered 130 miles away in southern Louisiana.

The prime suspect is Barnett’s boyfriend, Daniel Callihan. WDSU reported.

Jarry Brunette, 6, was found alive in a car in a wooded area of Jackson on Thursday, with the body of his sister, Erin, lying just yards away, according to the Tangipahoa County Sheriff’s Office. According to WVUE.

“Based on the appearance of the crime scene, this may be a location where human trafficking occurred,” said Joseph Wade with the Jackson Police Department. He told reporters “I see cages, cages for little animals,” he said at a press conference.

Julie suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigators are still trying to determine how Erin died.

“As a police chief, I don’t want to see this. As a father, I don’t want to see this,” Wade said.

“A coward took this child from his family.”

Authorities said Callahan followed a passerby who was acting suspiciously and led officers to the girls.

Authorities said Barnett, the girls’ mother, had been missing for more than 24 hours before being found “brutally murdered” in a bedroom of her Loranger home on Thursday.

Her children, who were reported missing by their father on Wednesday, were nowhere to be found when her body was discovered, police said.

Louisiana State Police say the children were abducted just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

An Amber Alert was issued just after noon, reporting that a man was being sought for questioning in connection with a domestic violence incident that led to Barnett’s death.

Police have not yet had a chance to question Callahan, officials said.

The Post has reached out to local agencies for additional information.
