Investigation Launched After Mother Fails to Account for Missing Daughter

Ashley Buzzard reportedly mentioned to someone that she had left her missing 9-year-old daughter, Melody, with a couple from Utah she met at a zoo.

The individual accusing Buzzard of holding him against his will stated that she expressed regret after revealing details about her daughter’s situation. He shared this information with a news outlet.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation into Melody’s case on October 14. This followed school officials’ notices that she hadn’t been seen for quite some time. Buzzard couldn’t provide a credible account regarding where her daughter might be.

Tyler Brewer, who claims to work in the court system, described an incident where Buzzard brandished a box cutter and locked his door after divulging information she seemed to wish she hadn’t shared. He noted that she appeared upset after speaking and subsequently refused to leave.

Although Buzzard faced a felony charge for false imprisonment stemming from the incident on November 6, a judge dismissed the case on November 20.

Confusion Surrounding Melody’s Situation

Brewer, who had been to Buzzard’s residence multiple times, admitted uncertainty about the truth of her claims regarding Melody. He was particularly unsettled when she broke down upon being asked about the possibility of her daughter being harmed or trafficked.

“I don’t want to think she could have hurt Melody, since I believe she loves her, but her lack of a clear answer makes me very uneasy,” he expressed.

He also stated that Buzzard’s journey with Melody seemed to have been conducted under the influence of someone she hardly knew. Buzzard had purportedly informed Brewer that Melody required outpatient surgery and, thus, needed to be relocated temporarily.

Investigators previously made public surveillance footage showing both Buzzard and her daughter at a rental car location in Lompoc, California, as they prepared to travel.

Authorities reported that they left California on October 7, heading toward Nebraska in a Chevrolet Malibu with California plates, later returning through Kansas.

On October 8, a Malibu was seen bearing New York license plates, which detectives believe may have been altered to evade detection. After the vehicle was returned to a rental agency in California, the original plates were reattached.

Unraveling the Timeline of Events

Investigators are confident that during their journey across multiple states—including California, Arizona, and Nevada—there were moments when Buzzard was not with Melody.

As described by authorities, Melody is approximately 4 feet to 4 feet 6 inches in height, weighs between 60 to 100 pounds, and has curly brown hair and brown eyes.

Inquiries have been sent to Buzzard’s legal representative for feedback on this troubling case.
