The man set out alone on a multi-day backpacking trip from Thunder River to Deer Creek, one of the most challenging backcountry trails in the park. The park service did not say what day the man set out on his 30-mile hike.

Relatives reported the man missing on Tuesday after they failed to contact him.

The cause and circumstances of death are still unknown.
