Tragic Home Invasion in Mississippi
A tragic incident occurred in Mississippi where an elderly couple was killed following a break-in by a teenage boy. The couple, 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife, Virginia Carol Blair, lost their lives in a violent confrontation that escalated when sheriff’s deputies arrived to investigate.
Seventeen-year-old Cordarius Hobbs is accused of breaking into the Blairs’ home in Mendenhall, Mississippi, which is about 30 miles south of Jackson. In the chaos, Hobbs allegedly shot a deputy responding to the situation.
Earlier this week, Hobbs appeared before a judge for the first time regarding these serious charges.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the couple’s residence around 12:24 a.m. on June 3 after family members expressed concern about their inability to reach them.
Upon arrival, deputies faced gunfire, forcing both police and civilians nearby to find cover. The situation intensified, leading to the involvement of the county’s SWAT team after more shots rang out from the home.
According to Sheriff Brian Bailey, Hobbs reportedly intended to surrender through the front door. However, instead, he fled out the back, prompting a chase during which he was ultimately shot by a state trooper. He was then taken into custody and treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.
Moreover, a deputy was injured in the exchange but is now in stable condition and recuperating at home.
Hobbs faces numerous charges, including two counts of capital murder, robbery, and multiple counts of aggravated assault involving both law enforcement and the elderly couple.
The couple’s family expressed their heartbreak in a public statement, emphasizing the support they feel from their community during this difficult time. A friend described the Blairs as exceptionally generous individuals, remarking that they would readily give the shirt off their backs to help others. This senseless act has left many in the community in shock, grappling with the loss of such kind-hearted people.
