Mississippi woman pleads guilty to stealing government funds

A Mississippi woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to illegally receiving unemployment benefits, authorities announced Tuesday.

Misty Burgess, of Plantersville, arraigned in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi on one count of theft of government funds, State Auditor Shad White said in a news release.

Burgess applied for unemployment benefits in May 2020 using her sister’s personal information, but her sister was incarcerated at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility at the time and therefore was not eligible for such benefits, News reported. the release stated. White’s office said she is suspected of receiving approximately $15,604 in fraudulent benefits.

“This is one of many unemployment compensation cases we have worked on over the last year,” White said, “and we will continue to use the latest technology and techniques. As a result, my team has been able to recover more funds in the past five years than in any other five-year period in the state’s history.”

Burgess will be sentenced on September 5th and could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
