Missouri Couple Accused of Child Abuse

A couple in Missouri is facing serious allegations of abusing their two teenage children. Investigators say they locked the teens in a chicken coop and shot them with a BB gun, which, according to reports, is just part of a long history of mistreatment.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Chantel Spring Hayford, 38, from Potosi, Missouri, and Jerry Allen Menies were arrested on January 13. While Menies’ age isn’t stated, he faces multiple charges. These include two counts each of first-degree kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child, as well as charges for armed criminal action and child abuse, among others.

Hayford is charged similarly, with two counts of kidnapping, a count of sexual abuse, and several counts related to endangerment and abuse. Both are currently being held without bail.

The investigation kicked off when the Department of Family Services alerted authorities about possible abuse and neglect involving the two children, aged 13 and 14. This led to search warrants and the subsequent arrests.

Court documents outline disturbing recurring abuse claims against the teenagers. Reportedly, during questioning, the children recounted being locked in the coop and targeted with BB guns. They also mentioned being threatened with real firearms, specifically a handgun, and warned against speaking about the abuse.

The warrant application outlines a troubling history of violence and control, indicating that the couple organized “night outings” where the children were forced into fights. This alleged pattern further led to human trafficking charges after an adult guardian reported the children seeking food at their home and later confirmed that Hayford agreed to transfer custody for a cell phone plan. This arrangement was documented legally.

Upon arrival at the guardian’s home, the children were found to be severely underweight, not attending school, and subsequently identified as illiterate by health care providers. The investigation remains active, with assistance from the Child Advocacy Center and local family services.
