Human Trafficking Operation Rescues Children During World Cup

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the successful completion of a multi-agency operation in Kansas City, Missouri, during the 2026 World Cup, resulting in the rescue of eight missing children.

As reported on June 22, DHS’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Kansas City collaborated with the FBI, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and North Kansas City Police to apprehend several individuals involved in exploiting minors. A press release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detailed this operation.

“This operation was centered around identifying and capturing sexual predators looking to exploit children and dismantling human trafficking networks in the area,” said ICE. “Through coordinated undercover work, law enforcement was able to arrest multiple individuals attempting to engage in illicit sexual activities with minors.”

The release outlined the various charges faced by the suspects as a result of this operation.

For instance, Jason Gruey, 50, hailing from Pensacola, Florida, was charged in Missouri for attempted child enticement and attempted possession of child pornography. Similarly, Curtis Ray Gibson, 47, from Lenexa, Kansas, faces federal charges for attempting to sex traffic a child.

The investigative team has also seized digital devices from the suspects for forensic analysis as legal proceedings continue.

Rick Sabatini, acting special agent in charge of HSI Kansas City, noted that most of the rescued minors were teenagers from the local area who had either run away or had been reported missing previously.

ICE commended the collective efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

“Strong partnerships are essential for our success in combating human trafficking. Leading up to the World Cup, our collaborative efforts with the FBI, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and North Kansas City Police were vital in protecting our communities and ensuring that criminals face justice,” stated Sabatini. “Together, we send a clear message: exploitation will not be tolerated.”

Eight missing children were rescued during the World Cup, thanks to the efforts of HSI Kansas City in the fight against human trafficking. Thank you to all the heroes who took part in saving these children.
