Missouri Powerball winner shares that his record $893M win won't alter his way of life: 'I'm someone who enjoys staying at home'

Missouri Lottery Winner Plans to Keep Life Simple

The recent winner of Missouri’s largest lottery jackpot shared that, despite the staggering amount, he intends to maintain his humble way of living. He referred to this newfound fortune as the “best problem” he’s ever had.

On Monday, the Missouri Lottery confirmed the winner of the record-breaking $1.787 billion Powerball, which was purchased at a QuikTrip in St. Louis on September 6th.

While collecting his prize at the lottery headquarters in Jefferson City, he expressed that the reality of winning such a life-altering amount still hadn’t completely registered with him.

“I’m a billionaire, but I did the laundry last night…” said the winner, who chose to remain anonymous due to Missouri’s laws on lottery winner identities.

Even with his excitement, he acknowledged having trouble sleeping after learning about his win.

“That’s the best problem I’ve ever had,” he remarked.

As he and his wife think about what comes next, they plan to dedicate the first year to focusing on themselves.

“I’m just going to do it for a year,” he said, emphasizing that his windfall would help ease some of his wife’s burdens and create more treasured moments together.

On a personal note, the winner described himself as a homebody, relishing quiet days at home. “The perfect day is just chilling out,” he shared, yet he humorously noted that his wife might have other plans for them.

Although he will have to share the historic jackpot with another winner in Texas, his portion amounts to $893.5 million, marking the largest lottery prize ever won in Missouri.

“It was a record night for Missouri’s lottery, and the highest jackpot win reached $893.5 million,” stated Leicester Elder, the executive director of the Missouri Lottery.

This amount far exceeds the previous Missouri record of $293.7 million, won back in November 2012.

The winner opted for a lump-sum payment of around $410 million.

According to Powerball statistics, the chances of any one person winning a prize are about 1 in 24.9 million, while the odds of winning a jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million.

This year saw four jackpot winners, including the recent Powerball success. Another ticket in California netted a prize of $245.5 million on May 31st.

Earlier this year, there were three other substantial winners: one for $167 million in Kentucky in April, a $526.5 million jackpot in California in March, and a $328.5 million prize in Oregon in January.

Historically, California’s Edwin Castro holds the record for the largest Powerball win, taking home $2.04 billion in November 2022, opting for $997.6 million after taxes.

Following Castro’s victory, a $1.765 billion prize was split among winners in California, Florida, and Tennessee in October 2023. Another significant jackpot was the $1.586 billion shared among three states in January 2016.

The most recent big win in Oregon was $1.326 billion in April 2024, while another California ticket produced a $1.08 billion payout in July 2023.

The list of top ten jackpots includes various enormous prizes across multiple states, with winnings often reaching into the hundreds of millions.
