Mitch Marner’s Playoff Redemption in Vegas

One of the standout narratives of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has to be the journey of Mitch Marner with the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Sure, everyone knew he had talent, but his playoff performances while in Toronto? Let’s just say they weren’t exactly stellar.

But now? Marner is shining, leading Las Vegas to the Western Conference Finals. It’s interesting, really, because it feels almost like déjà vu.

Marner kicked things off in Game 6 against the Anaheim Ducks with a goal just over a minute in, helping the Golden Knights secure a 5-1 win. This victory advances them to face the Colorado Avalanche—a tough opponent, for sure.

With that goal, Marner marked his seventh of the playoffs, placing him at the top with 18 points overall. He’s only three points shy of Quinn Hughes and Kirill Kaprizov, who are tied for second place.

I think many fans saw this coming. Toronto’s playoff struggles are notorious. Since 1967, there hasn’t been a Stanley Cup, and between 2004 and 2023, the Maple Leafs had a nearly two-decade gap without winning a series.

It’s almost ironic to see Marner thrive the moment he gets a shot at the playoffs with a different team after that sign-and-trade last summer.

This scenario feels familiar, right? Just think back to Phil Kessel’s time with the Maple Leafs. He dealt with heavy scrutiny from fans and the media alike.

After being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kessel went on to win the Stanley Cup the next season. It’s amusing how these patterns seem to repeat—

And Nazem Kadri, who also found success with Colorado after leaving Toronto. It kind of makes you wonder if Marner has managed to dodge a bullet this time around.

Of course, it’s still a bit early to say for sure. While he seems to have escaped a particularly rough season, the Leafs are gearing up to draft star player Gavin McKenna from Penn State with the No. 1 overall pick. Perhaps that could change things for them pretty quickly.
